International Citizen Inspections: KLEINE BROGEL

On Wednesday, March 18, a "citizens' nuclear weapons inspection team" presented itself before the gates of the Belgian NATO air base at Kleine Brogel.  It is common knowledge that there are a certain number of U.S. B61 nuclear free fall bombs stored at this air base.  The inspection team included three present or former parliamentarians.

One of them, Hugo VanDienderen, said that it is his constitutional duty, as a member of the parliament, to control the government and to verify whether the Belgian authorities respect the international treaties, respect the opinion of the ICJ and follow the resolutions of the U.N. General Assembly.

When it was clear their request to inspect was refused, the team attempted to run into the base anyway, but were quickly apprehended.

The team judged the unwillingness of the military command to cooperate with the inspection as a clear indication that there are indeed nuclear weapons of mass destruction illegally stored at the base.
