OTHER PLOWSHARES UPDATES
LAURENTIAN SHIELD
Donna and Tom Howard-Hastings have been promoted to "level
IV" house-arrest status, one step shy of parole, which they expect
to be granted on August 11, barring interference from their refusal to
pay restitution to the Navy for their Laurentian Shield disarmament action
of April, 1996, that shut down the Project ELF antenna in Wisconsin.
JUBILEE PLOWSHARES
Jubilee Plowshares defendants Michele Naar-Obed and Erin
Seiber both recently departed the Norfolk, Virginia area and had the
remainder of their probation supervision reassigned elsewhere. Seiber moved
back to Philadelphia and Naar-Obed to Duluth, Minnesota, where she and
her family plan to reside at the Loaves and Fishes Catholic Worker until
the expiration of Naar-Obed's probation restrictions permit their return
to their home community at Baltimore's Jonah House. In August, 1995,
the Jubilee Plowshares disarmed a nuclear-capable fast attack submarine
under construction at Newport News Shipbuilding near Norfolk.
SILO PRUNING HOOKS
Fr. Carl Kabat is now completing a prison sentence for parole
violation dating back to the Silo Pruning Hooks disarmament action of November,
1984. He has agreed to enter a half-way house in Kansas City, Missouri,
this August, near the site of the now empty and abandoned Minuteman nuclear
missile silo that was the target of the 1984 action. Kabat's 1994
Good Friday/April Fools Day disarmament action at a North Dakota missile
silo led to his violation of the 1984 parole. Kabat's steadfast refusal
to pay restitution makes his tenure at the half-way house uncertain.
