The
Brandywine Peace Community, faithful opponents for 20 years of nuclear
war-making in the Delaware River valley, returned again on Hiroshima Day
to faithfully challenge the unwelcome neighbor now known as Lockheed Martin,
the #1 nuclear weapons contractor. The mid-day commemoration included music,
ritual and speakers.
Following the commemoration, a Citizen Disarmament Notification of Inspection was read aloud. Wearing bright yellow T-shirts stating: "CITIZENS DISARMAMENT INSPECTION - Hiroshima Day 1998 - site of inspection: Lockheed Martin," the Citizens' team approached Lockheed Martin, stopped at its property and re-read the demand. They then asked guards to inform the General Manager of the demand, while they waited just outside the line for his response.
After nearly an hour's wait, six people, about half the team, decided to begin the inspection without further delay, and crossed the property line. They were arrested, cited and released, unlikely to face prosecution. After this event, Brandywine Peace Community issued a petition demanding a Citizens Disarmament Inspection of all Lockheed Martin facilities in Valley Forge. Signers and circulators are welcome.
