Dear Friends,
Some of you have contacted us, wondering if an issue of the Nuclear Resister was lost in the mail, or if perhaps your subscription had expired. Others have been in touch to ask for an updated list of imprisoned activists so they could send notes and cards.
No, it's not the post office. We are very late with the Nuclear Resister issue which was due out at the beginning of February. Our sincere apologies - to subscribers, to those in prison, and to the people who have been busy in these past months vigiling, blockading, trespassing and going to court and jail.
We have simply been swamped! There has been much going on with our family, in our community and in the world, and as we're sure many can relate to, we have been even busier than usual. We've felt swept away by all that has demanded our attention.
Several times we began to work on the issue of the Nuclear Resister,
only to be faced with significant interruptions which could not be ignored!
Deadlines for jobs which help pay the bills kept cropping up, such as production
of the monthly Tucson Peace Calendar, and the Arizona Yoga Association
Newsletter. Protesting sanctions and yet more bombings.
Weekly - sometimes daily - vigils at the federal building. Getting
flyers made, sending out press releases and doing press interviews.
Regular
vigils at Tucson's Raytheon missile plant, where the Tomahawk cruise
and many other missiles striking Yugoslavia and Iraq are now manufactured.
Getting the newsletter of the U.S. Campaign to Free Mordechai Vanunu to
the printer and mailed out, and greeting Madeline Albright with a
demonstration (with 300 others) when she arrived in Tucson to speak at
the University of Arizona commencement ceremony. Meetings and
more meetings, of all sorts.
So we especially thank those who have faithfully continued to send information about actions, and donations, in spite of not having seen a new issue in months!
The days ahead look very full as well, but we are determined to get
a 16 page, double issue out (the Nuclear Resister #115 & 116) by early
June. Please help by sending us news of any recent actions as soon as possible,
including from Holy Week, Tax Day and those protesting U.S. bombings.
(If
you've heard about any anti-war arrests, even if you were not directly
involved, please let us know about it so we can track down the details.)
In the meantime, we have included with this letter an updated "Inside and Out" list of anti-nuclear and anti-war activists in prison.
After nearly two decades in print, we've been told that the Nuclear Resister's news of creative, determined and persistent nonviolent direct action encourages the spirit of the imprisoned resister. And we know from our own experience that this news nurtures our own and many other local efforts for a peaceful, nuclear-free future. Such inspiration is sorely needed now, in the midst of the most offensive U.S. military moves since 1991, and so we want to get this next issue out as soon as possible.
Since we last published, President Clinton has distinguished himself
as the leader of the country responsible for bombing the greatest number
of sovereign nations in a year. The bombing of Iraq and Yugoslavia
continues as we write, and just days ago, the Pentagon confirmed their
use of
depleted uranium weapons in Yugoslavia, blurring the line between "conventional"
and "nuclear" war. These recent war moves have again prompted widespread
protest and nonviolent acts of resistance, reports of which have begun
to overflow the file drawer in our office.
We rely on your support to get this information out! Please send whatever donation you are able to help the Nuclear Resister at this time.
We have been too busy to do much fundraising in recent months. In addition to the extra printing and postage costs involved in producing a double issue, we are facing other needs essential to the work which require significant sums of money, such as a computer printer which needs to be replaced.
Encouraging notes, prayers and warm thoughts are also welcome!
Thank you for your patience and support.
Peace,
Felice and Jack Cohen-Joppa
